Handling Conflict The Right Way

So being married has made me realize that I don’t always handle conflict and confrontation well. I wish I handled it better, but when my spouse and I fight things can get pretty heated. It’s that we have two different styles. I like to get right into things and say exactly what I’m feeling. They like to wait and process their thoughts before getting into anything. This has made things hard on the both of us, but we are learning how to handle it better. There are ways to make things better with our fights and we are figuring it out now.

The first thing we do is take a moment before the fight starts. This is when I ask myself the question “Is talking about this going to make the situation any better right now or is it just going to make me feel better?” This is a really important question that I started to ask and it has made me a better spouse. If I think that it is only going to make me feel better, then I don’t bother bringing it up. I wait it out and let things cool. I go on Canada 411 and look for a new restaurant to occupy my time.

My spouse does their part too. For me, it’s nice to know when something is amiss. I feel often like they are mad but won’t tell me. I tell them always when I am upset. They don’t like to do that but they are getting much better at communicating their thoughts and feelings to me. It means a lot to me when they take the time to tell me. We are not great with conflict, but we love each other and we are working to get better and it gets a little better every day.

Democracy Means Having the Chance to Learn and Grow

For people who live in democratic countries, democracy probably isn’t something they think that much about. They’re just used to it, and it’s how they live their lives. For people who live in other countries, though, democracy might be something that they haven’t even heard much about, don’t understand, and aren’t sure how to get. They may not understand how it works, and they may not know how to get it for themselves. Naturally, that’s frustrating for people who see that democracy is a good idea and can’t get it to the people who need it. There’s little that they can do.

If you live in a democracy, you have the opportunity to think and choose for yourself, which is a lot more freedom than some people are given. You can attend school, make choices about your health, get insurance information so you can make a wise decision, and decide what you want to do with your life. There are many countries where these kinds of things are not options, and it’s very difficult for some of the people who live under those types of conditions. Of course, not everyone has a problem with living in a place that’s not a democracy.

Everyone is different, and has opinions about what’s good and bad for him or her. Democracy isn’t about telling everyone that they have to embrace democracy. It’s about making sure that they understand there is a choice. If they don’t know the choice exists, they really can’t be asked to make a decision that’s based on all of the available evidence. When you understand what democracy really is, you can use that information to make better choices in your life. It’s a great way to move forward with life and continue to learn and grow as a person.

China’s Position on Internet Censorship

Over the past several years, China has proven that is good at many things. In some areas, China is even the best. One of those areas is censorship. Few governments can censor its own people as well as China can.

The most recently discovered act attempts to prevent college students from accessing research and essays published outside of China. Students can access domestic scholarship for free. When it comes to scholarship from outside the country, though, students have to pay a hefty fee. Most students, of course, choose the free option. After all, despite the differences between China and the U.S., both countries have broke college students.

This isn’t the only way that China has tried to control information crossing its borders via the Internet. Anti-government propaganda is removed from sites. China even has problems with Google because it gives unfettered access to online information. Heaven forbid that someone should access an opinion not sanctioned by the authorities.

The Chinese, however, aren’t a dimwitted group of people. They are just as adaptable and curious as the rest of humanity. They have, therefore, found ways of getting around government censorship online. The very idea that a central authority can regulate such a decentralized network is laughable. All it takes is one person who knows how to download the right software that allows a computer to evade government interception.

China will likely continue to push its own citizens against the wall for as long as the people take it. For the time being, though, many of them are playing a dangerous game: they use the Internet to defy government rule and organize against party leaders. The punishments are particularly harsh in China, but many people probably feel that they have more to lose by accepting government authority than fighting against it.

What are the Basics of Democracy?

Second round of the French presidential electi...

Though most people in the US understand why democracy is so important, some people do not completely understand what it is. Democracy is extremely important for people’s rights. in a democracy, the people have the right to be heard. If a law goes into effect, you have the right to object to it. There are different types of democracy, and in the US we are a democratic republic. In many organizations and groups, a more basic form of democracy is used.

in the basic form of democracy, almost all decisions are made by a popular or majority vote. For example, if you are in a group and they want to change the meeting day to a different day of the week, for this change to take place all members must vote. If more than half of the people say that they like the idea, it is accepted as the new meeting day.

In the government of the US, we don’t vote on every issue that comes our way. Instead, we vote for representatives, who then do the voting on the issues for us. This form of democracy tends to work better for the government of a country simply because if every person were to vote on every issue that came up, we would spend all of our time voting.

If you find that the representatives of your area are not voting how you feel they should be, you have more control over the situation than you do with things like what kind of TV show will be on next season or who gets listed among the top affiliate programs. Many times, people will contact their senator, congress person, or even governor, and let them know what they feel. If you really feel that the representative is not doing a good job, you can show it by not voting for that person in the next elections.

Politics and the Internet

United States President Barack Obama signs int...
Image via Wikipedia

The way that politicians communicate their platforms to voters has dramatically changed since the days when the U.S. first formed its democracy. Sure, some of the fundamental principles are the same, but the way candidates inform their public on what they pledge to do if elected to office and their plan of execution is vastly different from the days of yore when all candidates had to convey their messages were strong voices, soapboxes and town meeting halls.

Perhaps the most dramatic and influential change on how politicians communicated their ideas to voters took place in the early 1950s when television became an outlet for politicians to convey their campaign promises to the public. Historians cite the presidential race between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson as the first election in which both parties used TV as a means of communicating their campaign messages. Since then, the television has been and remains one of the main outlets used to convey campaign promises.
And while TV viewers and voters alike are regaled with politically-focused commercials from August to Election Day, the Internet is quickly picking up momentum as a cost-effective and efficient way of sharing campaign messages with the general public.

Although the Internet’s role in political campaigns can be traced back to 2004 when Howard Dean’s staff used the Internet as a place to raise campaign funds, its usefulness proved invaluable to Barack Obama’s campaign in 2007, where the Internet was used as a recruiting tool, a meeting place and an advertising medium. Granted, the Internet had undergone some significant changes since Dean’s day, thanks to the popularity of social networking sites, which Obama’s staff leveraged to the fullest to gain voter support quickly and cost effectively.
Many credit the staff’s use of the Internet as to why and how Obama was quickly and nimbly able to gain voter support and clench the victory as U.S. president. Why historians will certainly debate this in the years to come, what’s certain is that Obama’s staff’s use of the Internet forever changed the way candidate’s will campaign from here on out.
